The year is 1942. Anne Calloways destiny is already clearly defined – she is engaged to Gerard Godfrey and is sure that she will be happy. But a few weeks before the wedding, Anne decides to go to the front with her childhood friend Kitty as a nurse. There, on Bora Bora, she meets soldier Vestry Green, and their friendship blossoms into true love. In an abandoned bungalow, once the home of a famous artist and believed by the natives to be a cursed place, the lovers create their own little world in the midst of bloody battles. The war will end, and these two will have to return to their former life and make a choice – if nothing prevents them from being together. After many years, Grandma Ann receives a letter from a stranger who takes her back to those times. But will this story have a happy ending?
